At-Home STI Testing Options Have Expanded Sharply — Here's What's Now Available

The list of FDA-authorized at-home STI tests has grown substantially over the past two years, giving consumers more ways to screen for infections without a clinic visit.

The FDA granted marketing authorization to the Visby Medical Women's Sexual Health Test, the first fully at-home, prescription-free test for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis, which delivers results in about 30 minutes using a self-collected vaginal swab, according to the agency's own announcement. Clinical evaluations cited by the FDA found the test correctly identified more than 97% of positive samples across all three infections.

That authorization followed the FDA's approval of the first at-home syphilis test, which delivers initial results in about 15 minutes, according to the American Sexual Health Association. As with other rapid tests, a positive result requires a follow-up confirmatory test through a clinic or lab.

Separately, GoodRx reports that the FDA cleared the INSTI HIV Self Test in 2025, billed as the first rapid HIV test available in the U.S. capable of delivering a result in one minute or less.

The FDA has noted that expanding at-home testing access is particularly valuable for people who might otherwise delay testing due to anxiety or stigma. At the same time, the agency has emphasized that both false positive and false negative results remain possible with any test, and that individuals with a positive result, or with ongoing symptoms despite a negative one, should follow up with a healthcare provider.
